The "Ocelot" Jungle Carpet Python

The Ocelot Project marks the official introduction of a fully authenticated, predictable polygenic pattern mutation in Jungle Carpet Pythons (Morelia spilota cheynei).

Unlike traditional Jungle lines defined by standard bands, clean stripes, or jagged saddles, the Ocelot line entirely reconfigures the lateral and dorsal layout of the animal. The mutation drives a radical structural change, shattering the pattern into highly distinct, isolated circles and ocelli (eyespots) along the lower flanks.

This document serves as the historical record and proof of concept for the Ocelot line. It establishes its genetic legitimacy, documents its multi-generation predictability, and outlines the baseline valuation for future animal releases.

2. Heritage & Lineage Authentication

Credibility in polygenic line-breeding relies entirely on the strength of the foundation animals. The Ocelot mutation was unlocked by blending two highly respected, top-tier bloodlines in the carpet python community:

  • Maternal Line: High-expression female Jungle produced by Psychotic Exotics.

  • Paternal Line: Selectively bred "Ivory x Vandeventer" Striped Jungle male.

By combining the structural integrity of the Psychotic Exotics lineage with the high-contrast, pattern-shifting properties of the Ivory x Vandeventer line, a unique genetic stack was established.

3. The Origin Story: An Accidental Discovery

The Ocelot mutation was discovered completely by accident. The original, long-term breeding goal for this project was not to create circles, but rather to isolate and refine hyper-clean striping in pursuit of a Tri-Striped Jungle Carpet.

  1. The F1 Pairing: The initial pairing of the Psychotic Exotics female to the Ivory x Vandeventer Striped male yielded a clutch of variable, high-expression striped animals.

  2. The Holdbacks: From this foundational clutch, 1.2 (one male, two females) of the absolute best-looking striped individuals were selected and held back for future line-breeding.

  3. The Genetic Shatter: The true breakthrough occurred when these 1.2 striped siblings reached maturity and were bred together. Instead of tightening into traditional, unbroken stripes, the concentrated genetic stack shattered. The dorsal lines broke apart, and the lateral pattern re-formed into the striking, isolated circular windows that define the Ocelot look today.

4. Methodology & Multi-Year Genetic Testing

To prove a polygenic mutation is a true, repeatable line—and not just a series of one-off "oddball" animals—rigorous testing is required. The Ocelot project was vetted over a strict three-year testing phase:

Phase 1: Repeat Results (The Replication Test)

  • The Test: The 1.2 original striped Jungles were bred back together.

  • The Purpose: To determine if the results from the first breeding in 2024 could be replicated with the same degree of variation in 2025.

  • The Result: Only one of the female Striped Jungles reproduced, and although half of what was originally a small clutch of fertile eggs (8), the resulting offspring displayed the same variety and array of phenotypic results seen in the 2024 pairing results.

Phase 2: Outcross Testing (The Dilution Test)

  • The Test: Breed the original 1.2 Striped Jungles to unrelated animals in 2026.

  • The Purpose: To observe if all three animals possessed and pass on the trait in question, and if so, to what degree to infer heritability.

  • The Result: All three Striped Jungles successfully reproduced with entirely unrelated Jungles. All three resulting clutches had low-expression (or diluted), but consistent results with the previous breeding. Two animals were bred to unrelated Striped Jungle Carpet Pythons. One animal was bred to a Zebra Jungle Carpet Python. The Zebra clutch hatched first and contained the most dramatic and extreme examples confirming heritability. The other two striped clutches had more diluted results consistent with some of the earlier clutch results.

5. Phenotypic Results & Visual Markers

The Ocelot mutation specifically alters the architecture of the pattern layout, completely independent of the animal's color. As with all high-end Jungle breeding, the classic variation of yellow pigment remains fully dynamic, albeit influenced by parental lineage.

An authenticated Ocelot Jungle Carpet is identified by three distinct visual markers:

  • Lateral Ocelli: Complete or near-complete circular rings along the lower flanks. These ink-black rings cleanly isolate and enclose the internal yellow pigment, forming yellow circles or ocelli bordered by black scales.

  • Dorsal Islanding: A complete breakdown of vertical bands and longitudinal striping along the spine. The dorsal pattern is reduced to rounded, floating islands that align in a linear arrangement along the spine. Some high-expression animal will demonstrate jagged dorsal striping.

  • Dynamic Yellow Contrast: The center of the ocelli will either have solid black scales as if to create a “bulls’ eye” or “rosette” pattern. Some ocelli will be solid yellow inside. Individual animals will display varying shades—ranging from soft cream yellows to intense, neon yellows—all starkly framed by deep, black borders. The amount of yellow tipping on the black flank scales is variable as well.

6. Market Valuation & Pricing Justification

When these animals are officially released to the public, their pricing structure will reflect the extensive time, data, and premium lineage invested into the project. The valuation of the Ocelot line is fully justified by the following parameters:

  • Proven Predictability: Buyers are not purchasing a random "oddball" snake with hopes that it might breed true. You are investing in a fully vetted, documented bloodline that has been successfully reproduced and stabilized over three years of targeted testing.

  • Pedigree Foundation: Every Ocelot carries the verified genetic blueprint of elite Psychotic Exotics and Ivory x Vandeventer bloodlines, giving the animals immense outcrossing value for future projects.

  • Tiered Quality Control: Future availability will be structured into strict tiers based on the perfection, symmetry, and count of the lateral ocelli. Pricing will scale dynamically:

    1. Tier 1 (Extreme Ocelot): Flawless, symmetrical, and fully isolated rings from neck to tail. Reserved for high-end investment and serious breeding programs.

    2. Tier 2 (Visual Ocelot): Strong circular expression on the flanks with minor traditional pattern remnants near the tail. Ideal for high-end display or outcross projects.

    3. Tier 3 (Low-Expression Ocelot): Aberrant patterns characterized by horizontal bars and broken dorsal striping. Ideal for those looking for unique phenotype or standout jungle.

7. Other Comparable Projects

The term “Ocelot” is not unique or new at all to the Carpet Python sector of the Reptile Hobby. It has loosely been applied to animals that display circular or rosette patterns, even if simply “one-off” or “non-genetic” reasons for the phenotype. Notable individuals who have projects that either share the Ocelot moniker or are pursuing a project similar in phenotype are;

1.        Mike Curtin (Scattershot Exotics) – Well-known for his Ocelot Jungle Jaguar projects and resulting offshoots (Caramel Ocelot Jungle Jaguar, Caramel Ocelot, etc).

2.        Dominic Carbonneau & Shan Melanson – Two Canadian Breeders working with a longer-established line of Ocelot Jungles exclusive to the Canadian Market.

3.        Robert & Stacey Moss (MFA Reptiles) – As of this writing (2026) they are still currently in the breeding and testing stages of pursuing a similar project that they are currently referring to as their “Bengal Project.”

Note, none of the previously mentioned projects have crossed over into one another’s lines or projects. Each one appears to be independent of one another.
